WE1326 with EM7565

Post by Darrick602 »

I'm sorta knew to all this but I do know my way around electronics. I want to setup a WE1326 with a EM7565 and was wondering if someone can lead me in the right direction. I know I will need the adapter but which one there are different key type adpters. And also what program will I need on my PC to install firmware on everything. And do I need a m.2 adapter with a USB port so I can upgrade firmware. I will be much appreciated if anyone can give me a hand on this. Thanks

You will need a Mini PCI-E Key B Adapter (with or without extra SIM).
And also what program will I need on my PC to install firmware on everything. And do I need a m.2 adapter with a USB port so I can upgrade firmware.
Depending on when you purchased your EM7465, I would forgo updating the firmware unless there is a specific reason to otherwise do so.

Then, once your online, I would consider using the Sierra Wireless AirVantage to update it.

If you want to update using a PC, you will need to download the firmware, and the Sierra Wireless Software (drivers) for Windows, and you will need a USB to M.2 adapter.

Do you think going with the Linksys Wrt3200acm with EM7565 usb to m.2 would be a better pair then the we1326?

I just set up this very combination. I've been delayed in posting the tutorial, but maybe I'll spend some time the next couple days to put that together.

High level: I updated the router firmware to the latest version of the WiFiX firmware, then installed the modem and adapter (which was the hardest part of the whole thing, due to how the adapter on the modem fit together with the mounting hardware), leaving the modem firmware alone. At some point during the early set-up, wifi stopped working (and possibly ethernet), so I reset it. When it booted, I was able to connect, but was presented with the Chinese screen that you might see mentioned in some of the posts. I clicked the button and it asked for a file. I gave it the same file I had used to do the router firmware upgrade and all was good after that. It hasn't happened since then.

I'll try to get the tutorial posted, but if you have any questions, feel free to post and I'll answer what I can.

I do plan to do the modem upgrade using the AirVantage process that JimHelms mentioned, but I haven't done it yet, and it seems to be working fairly well.

As for updating the router firmware, you can do that over wifi or over ethernet via the browser. You don't need any special types of drivers to do that.

I'm not familiar with the Wrt3200acm. What features does it have that you feel you'd be missing out on with the WE1326? It seems like the Wrt3200acm is more expensive.

I wanted to get the M.2 adapter with the sim slot that Jim mentioned, just to have a back-up in case the built in slot had any issues. They weren't in stock, so I went with the non-sim slot adapter. However, after having used it, I would lean towards using the router sim slot anyway, because it allows you to remove the sim if you want to use it in another device for testing. It is a bit of a pain to insert and remove via the slot in the case, because it sits too far inside the case, but by using a thin, flat edged object, like a butter knife, you can do it.

So could I just buy USB3.0 To NGFF M.2 Key B Adapter Enclosure With SIM Card Slot and buy a high-quality router that has 3.0 USB what would I have to do to get a system like that to work plus would I be able to take full advantage of what the em7565 had to offer?

I've seen a lot of people discuss rigs like that. And with USB 3.0, you wouldn't hit a USB 2.0 limit if you were lucky enough to get 60 MHz of bandwidth from a tower and get close to theoretical speeds with the modem. I don't think it is possible in the real world to get close to that 600 Mbps, but USB 3.0 isn't going to hurt either.

The router would need to support a firmware that supports the modem though. If you are concerned about the wifi on the WE1326, the other option, which is what I'll be doing, is to not use the wifi on the router and connect it via ethernet to another router that I use for my firewall and port forwarding, etc. That one runs Tomato. It is an old Linksys/Cisco e3000. I also have a 3rd router tethered to that one via ethernet to a central location in the house and that one serves only as a wireless access point. That one is an Asus RT-AC5300 and has really good wifi coverage.

For most people, not using the wifi on the LTE router and tethering to a second router over ethernet that has better wifi is a good option.

I bought the Linksys wrt32x so you know of any firmware that will support USB tethering because it doesn't support it right out the box currently I have a mifi tethered to my PC and ethernet from PC to router works great but would like to connect em7565 to the router at some point

One great setup is running GoldenOrb on the Linksys WRT3200 and using the USB3.0 to M.2 Adapter enclosure to connect the two.

We are using the same setup with a WRT1900ACS.

It would probably depend on both the configuration in GoldenOrb and the device you are wanting to tether. You may want to start a new topic relating to that subject.

What is it? I see multiple cards in there. How does it compare to the WE1326 with EM7565 and why did you change?

@Darrick602 < Nice WE1326 mod pics, great job:) Personally I prefer the WG3526 for a few extra bucks it's probably a better value with its preinstalled 6 antennas/connectors, USB3, and plenty of extra room for future projects.

I've been reading a few other posts where people are talking about hitting a data bottleneck on the USB2 bus.
From my experience with a simple CAT-4 modem connected via USB2, using a single 20Mhz mobile channel with a good quality signal, it can hit up to 100Mbps down pretty consistently. USB2's specs call for 480Mbps (in theory), but in the real world it can easily hit half of that (about 200Mbps) including overhead. Even a CAT-12 modem's bottleneck is on the mobile connection side (current LTE limitations even with multiple CA's), than on the USB2 bus. Now, once we get into the new 5G modem$$$ with 1 to 2Gbps (in theory), real world 500Mbps down will definitely shine on USB3's full-duplex Super-Speed bus. Anyone's ready to crack open that piggy-bank, and drill two more holes for the extra 5G antennas? ;)
