Mifi 8000

Hello all. Ive been trying a note 9 on sprint at home and am getting 75-100mbs. It's picking up band 2 just by my house. It works great so I joined calys for 3 months and got the mifi 8000 figuring it was gonna be as fast or faster than the note. Not! It won't even activate here. The sprint tech says it will not domestic roam as the phone will. What can I do?

Sprint only uses Bands B25, B26 and B41, and eventually n41

Eventually the Tmobile bands will be added, but I have zero clue as to when that will be.

n/N bands are "5G" bands

Band 2 sounds like your roaming on an AT or Verizon tower.

Your best bet is to find the closest Sprint towers and figure out how far they are from your house. Once you have that info you can start looking into the proper antennas to scavenge that signal.

Did you pay for a full year, or did you get a quarterly account?

Sprint customers are already allowed to roam on Tmobile network (tested it), that's probably why for the band 2 connection. However, at this time Tmobile customer cannot roam on the Sprint network, which will be allowed later on.

Is there a hotspot device that will roam on band 2. The 8000 doesn't but my note 9 does. At the moment it's USB tethered to my asus router and it always over 50mbs. Yet the 8000 just sits with it's wheels spinning

Generally Sprint hotspots built before the Tmobile merger are unlikely to have band 2 support, though you can check the specs. A better option is to go with a modem such as Sierra EM7455/7511, Quectel EM06/12, etc. either in an external usb housing or in an OpenWRT router, since they will give you the best band support and flexibility.

Make sure the setting on the mifi 8000 "Menu-->Settings-->Roaming-->Allow domestic data roaming" is turned on. Theres another for international, turn it on too. Why not?

BillA, I overlooked my own info saying B2 is avail on Tmobile and then I said they were likely roaming on Verizon or ATT. I'm big goof. Thx.

I have a friend that uses the mifi 8000 and has verified his roams on Tmobile bands.

I have an active Mifi8000, as of today, and will test myself. I firs gotta figure out if I can band lock this booger, B41 is STRONG where I am.

You say it wont activate. Has it yet? If not, you should probably drive around and find a Sprint tower so it can fully activate. Use the menus and also update user profile and check for new firmware/software.

After you get that done, test its speeds via wifi on your phone, then head back to the house and see if it will roam.

I have not.

I've never seen an officially branded hotspot device that could be band locked. Typically I take the activated SIM card out and use it in a LTE gateway router with a good quality LTE Modem. For your tp-link, you could use an advance LTE modem in a usb adapter enclosure and setup that way. The modems like this allow band locking directly.

You should be able to tether the MiFi-8000 via WiFi and possibly via USB if it shows up as a standard RNDIS device. You may have to put the MiFi into bypass mode if possible (disable DHCP, enable DMZ). Here's how to do it (MiFi=phone) > https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?p=10303#p10303

It's a beefy router but uses Broadcom chipsets including its WiFi chipset and hence not the best match for GO.

The other option is, as Bill mentioned, RNDIS but that limits you to your hotspot allocation, which if in the U.S. is rarely beyond a few tens of GB unless you're using a reseller account (if you have a special plan, please share).

This is true, but that router can USB tether hotspots/phones innately without goldenorb. It can also do modems in USB enclosures but lacks the drivers for proper performance. It works better with hostless hotspots.

True, however, as a practical matter, for example, when using hostless hotspots, my neighbors and I really appreciate some of the connection tracking and monitoring features bundled into goldenorb.

I am unsure whether the asus rt-ac68u bundles those features.

The link I posted will require the more expensive ($40+ used) asus rt-ac68u to be sold and a new setup purchased, that offers features that the reader hopefully finds well worth their time and effort.
