Imaginary Novus

Post by Irishman2323 »

Hello, i recently started using the LTE internet company Called imaginary novus. I heard about it through reddit. So far everything is good they sent me a netgear lb1120 modem already preinstalled with an at&t sim card. I get about 10mbps down but i was wondering if there was a specific way one should position the modem relative to the MIMO antenna attached to optimize speed.

Im uncertain to what your asking, but heres my thought to what Im reading.....

The modem/router/hotspot itself has no direct relevance in positioning as it relates to external antennae other than, the shorter the cables the better.

The antenna positioning, for signal optimization, is different and really depends on which antennas we are referring to. What antennas do you have?

Could this be a promotional post?

Perhaps not, but at "$99.99/month+$149.99 One time Setup Fee" sounds like a ripoff to me. lol
They are just reselling the ATT $65 repaid plan at $99, doesn't take rocket science to figure it out.

In no way is this a promotional post. I have just started dabbling in LTE internet and this was how i got into it. Ripp off? Maybe. But for someone who pays not much less than that for internet that is 10 times slower it is a miracle. Now my main question wasn't clear and that is because i am trying to get a grip on how it all works. I have the modem with a MIMO antenna by netgear. I was just curious what the best way to position it was.

Ok @Irishman2323, please accept my apologies. Just seemed little odd with name of company as title of question, sure you can see how it could be taken wrong.

If you are using he supplied antennas (which we have not clue if and what they are), you best bet to move the router around until you find the best signal. Simple as that. Post some pics of your setup...

if you wish to find some good antenna choices, visit the store at https://thewirelesshaven.com/product-category/ant ... -antennas/

Pretty sure your router has "ts-9 type connectors". If looking for better performance, use the contact form at site to get some suggestions on antennas.

Completely understand lol. I did that incase anyone had worked with them before. Here is the antenna i bought based off the research i did on the modem.

https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-6000450- ... B00DN3J03O

Your right it has to Ts-9 connections that plug into the modem. But it is a flat square antenna. I spent a whole day positioning and repositioning it to get better signal. But it seemed positions that made sense to put it in only rendered worse results. The best speed i was able to get has the modem sitting directly above the antenna. While the antenna is under a desk near the floor. Again, this may because i am inexperienced in this subject but i was having trouble imagining why this would be more effective than having it mounted at a high point near a window. Thank you for the response.

Good deal, glad you are a real person and welcome to the Wireless Joint Forum!

I have the exact antenna and have used on similar hotspot (or at least with ts-9 connectors). Matter of fact will be carrying this portable setup with me on vacation soon :)

First off, I am totally against the ts-9 connector. It is not very good at keeping connections tight and that really matters when dealing with LTE frequencies. With that said, keep in mind it is very important to maintain solid connections between antenna and the router - if you expect to keep solid connection to network (tower).

Something I really suggest: if you are going to use LTE as main internet is get a router with SMA type connectors. But, understand you have already invested into your current router.

Now the big questions: What is your surroundings (ie, mountains, trees or clear)? Do you know where / direction the nearest tower is located?

The externa antenna you have is a good one and about the best indoor flat panel on the market. But the keyword here is "indoors" and will play a huge factor on the performance based on your location to tower.

Thanks! This has definitely been a ride lol. From what i have been able to find(as long as i am looking at the right kind of tower lol) the at&t tower is approximately 1 mile away. Unfortunately it is washington state so there are a lot of trees and hills.

First thing you need to make sure of, you know exactly where your tower is. If not sure you are shooting blanks in the dark :)

If it were me and I was in hills / trees, would mount my netgear lb1120 modem on wall so stationary. Then add two outdoor flat panel antennas. Keep in mind you want your router/modem in a place where you use least amount of coax. At higher LTE frequencies, cable loss is very high.

Without outdoor antennas, you will just have to move the router/modem/antenna around until you find the best signal. It is not usual for LTE signals to bounce off objects before they arrive at your antenna, so maybe pointed directly at tower is not best.

Visit the https://thewirelesshaven.com store. There are tools, site surveys and products to get your going. They have a contact form for recommendations too.

There is also tons of information here on the forum. Like this antenna review: https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=251 .

Is there a way to see what tower i am connecting too through my modem? Also, i would love to put up outdoor antennas but i rent the house. Has anyone had experience utilizing in place wiring from satellite dishes and such? Thanks again for the help. Not going to lie I've spent hours adjusting this damn thing lol

I am not familiar with the netgear lb1120 and what menu(s) it has. Best to google the question using your modem model or someone else can do better answering that than I.

Using the same coax as in-place satellite dish is far from ideal. Two different types of coax. Satellite uses 75Ohm and LTE routers/modems use 50Ohm. Not saying it cannot be done, but would only suggest it for someone with radio theory knowledge. I have a set of LTE MIMO antennas running off of 75Ohm coax but frowned upon by most in the industry.

Unless you just have a real strict landlord, why not just explain what you are doing and install antennas on an old satellite dish mount? Replace the existing 75Ohm with good quality 50Ohm by following same route...
