Need help debugging connection problems (CBA850 & EM7565)

Post by Agl539 »

I occasionally have to resort to a backup internet connection when my primary cable connection fails. I live in a canyon so my reception is dreadful. I wanted to see if I could improve this failover connection by relocating the CBA850 to the roof, installing a better modem and a pair of more capable antennas.
First hurdle I've hit is swapping out the LP6 EM7455 modem for the recently purchased (from The Wireless Haven) EM7565 which isn't connecting to my existing signal feed.
I've followed the CBA850 and EM7565 upgrade guides on here but still no luck and I'm out of ideas which was to look next. Ive tried latest generic and AT&T firmware.

My LTE service is a AT&T connected car plan. This has been working fine for 18 months connected to the CBA850LP6 device.

These are the logs and the status of the modem.

You are not registering with the network. Did you set your APN in the Connection Manager for the EM7565?

APN Default Override.png

Also, go to STATUS > INTERNET > CONNECTIONS > EM7565 > and go down to the Cellular Network and see if the APN (broadband) is listed in the Profile 1, 2, or 3.

Another issue I see is your signal stats:

Code: Select all

PCC RxM RSSI: -96 PCC RxM RSRP: -129
PCC RxD RSSI: -78 PCC RxD RSRP: -106
It appears something is going on with the MAIN (RxM) port of the modem. Notice the difference in the MAIN and the AUX (RXD) readings. These readings should be fairly close to one another.

This is usually caused by the MHF4 connector has popped off the modem connector port, or it is not seating good, or is grounding out on the metal portion of the modem.

That is assuming you have antennas hooked up to both.

Also notice the stats on the MC7455:

Code: Select all

PCC RxM RSSI: -54 RSRP (dBm): -85
PCC RxD RSSI: -95 RSRP (dBm): -136
They are right the opposite here which sort of hints to something in the antenna or cable system.

A quick test would be to reverse the antenna connectors and see if they reverse the disparity as well.

I had broadband set as APN, as per screenshot

My external antenna is connected only to Main currently but will go and verify the signals etc.

My antenna setup is far from optimal, and why I wanted to take a look to see if i could improve this setup.
I live in a canyon and reception frankly sucks. Currently I have been able to get 1mbps up, and about 5 mbps down reliable with the CBA8500LP6. I'm fully expecting to be purchasing a pair of new antennas from you too.
I'm using a single 450-2700MHz Radome 3dBi-6dBi 4G LTE Ultra Wide Band Omni-directional Antenna feeding into a
weBoost Connect 4G-X feeding directly into the main connection. This is why the main signal was "strong" and the aux was minimal, I actually had the LP6 connected to only main, where at the EM7565 I had connected main to my external antenna, and a rabbit ear from the cradle point to aux in case that affected anything. The signal strength in my home is very poor.
I omitted this detail trying to keep the original post somewhat reasonable in length. Sorry if this threw a curve ball into play. Appreciate your support. thank you.

With the only antenna connected to Aux, these are the stats

Code: Select all

PCC RxM RSSI: -93 PCC RxM RSRP: -125
PCC RxD RSSI: -40 PCC RxD RSRP: -67
and with only antenna connected to main, these are the stats (I rebooted and moved the connector across)

Code: Select all

PCC RxM RSSI: -77 PCC RxM RSRP: -108
PCC RxD RSSI: -94 PCC RxD RSRP: -134

Does this look like the connection is poor?

OK, I think Ive found the problem, user error as expected :-)
The cable which comes from the weBoost to the SMA connector has a female connector, and the connector on the adapter I got from your store also has female.
The cheap enclosures I used previously from Amazon were male.
males.jpg
The CB850LP6 modem is also female so even though the CBA850 actually connects, the signal will be garbage so I need to get the right cables clearly. I suspect this is the right time to order the antennas too.

I've just trying connecting my cradlepoint white ear antennas which at least have the right connector to my em7565 and get these figures (although appears to be stuck in 'attaching' mode which I suspect is due to poor signal reception).

Re: Need help debugging connection problems (CBA850 & EM7565)

The RxM is the MAIN antenna port on the modem and its connection must have a usable signal, regardless of the RxD signal which is used for diversity. It will not work the other way around (i.e., the AUX [RxD] having the usable signal while RxM does not).

In the image you posted of the black enclosure shows RP-SMA female connectors which require RP-SMA Male antenna/cable connectors. Not sure why these enclosures use RP-SMA connectors which are usually reserved for WiFi applications.

The white Cradlepoint paddle antennas are SMA Male. While the two connectors are similar, they are not compatible with one another.

Thanks Jim, got some cables inbound to verify the modem is configured correctly.
I'll also order up some new antennas, I would like your opinion on what I should order from your store for the best chance of getting a workable signal in my situation. No line of sight to mast, and pretty heavy foliage.
With the incorrect cables (!!!), the weBoost, and EM7455 I'm seeing 1mbps up, 5mbps down. I'm not looking for 100mbps+ here, 5/20 would be useful enough as its only a failover for my cable connection to keep me able to surf and mail.

Hmm... you are sort of in a valley.

How far away is the top of the first peak closest to you?

hmmm, Its actually hard to tell because the view is obstructed by trees! Heres the view from the roofline in the direction of the cell tower Im connecting too. I'm guessing its a few hundred meters away.

Looking at that terrain profile, and those trees, I clearly need the "magic signal catcher" brand of antenna :D

Yes, or one that floats. haha

If it were just the trees, I would try a set of the 15dBi panels. But with the trees and being in a valley, perhaps a set of omni-directional would better at catch the signals that are being reflected/scattered/bounced off the trees and hill slope.

Maybe someone else can make a recommendation.

I found a SMA converter today that adapted my RP SMA to enable me to test and my connection immediately came up with the em7565. I verified it works with the standard EM7455 modem as well and my speeds have improved to 20mbps down, and 4mbps up. I'm not seeing the same upload performance on my em7565 but thats probably a config issue. I'll do some more research and order up some antennas and cables this week to install over the holiday break.

Received 2 700-2700MHz 15dBi 4G LTE Directional Antennas and 2 698-2700MHz 6dBi-8dBi 4G LTE Omni Antennas for testing. Also have an external enclosure so I can move my router closer to the antennas and reduce some cable loss too.

Just sharing back for community (although will put a more detailed post up when Im finished testing).
With the omnidirectional antenna I see 11 down, 1 up, with the 15db flat panel literally thrown up and randomly pointed in the rough direction I see 28down, 9 up! This is just with a single panel still, no CA (due to waiting on LMR400 being delivered this weekend)

EDIT: Adding some modem stats from this connection

Signal Strength 82
RSSI -84 dBm
SINR 9.0 dB
RSRP -112 dB
RSRQ -6 dB

How do these figures look, getting uploads up 10mbps and downloads of 70mpbs with my two panel antennas connected with LMR400. I'm not sure how to tell if I'm using both antennas though so need to spend some time reading manuals.

Code: Select all

Have two browser tabs/windows open, one on your router debug (or where you got the above results), one on speedtest.net and start the test. Soon as you see the download test on speedtest.net start, quickly enter on router tab:

AT!GSTATUS?

Then post the results.

This will show better results.

The results you posted show CA using bands 2 and 11.
