MoFi 5500-7690, AT&T, No 4G Internet, only WCDMA 850

Post by l33der »

Hi everyone, new to the forum, hope you all are well. I looked everywhere and since this is such a new device I haven't found much info or others that are having a problem. I have been in contact with MoFi Support for about 3 weeks now and no success. Here is my issue:

I have AT&T Service, 20GB Month Hotspot/Tablet Plan, $300 paid for the year, assigned to the MoFi IMEI. AT&T Rep says it should work, service not being blocked, doesn't see an issue on his end. Problem is, the router will ONLY give Internet access when on Band 850 WCDMA with about 4-5 Mbps Down. The router will never connect on it's own to any 4G Bands unless I manually lock it those bands, which are 2, 4 and 66. All of my other cellular devices operate on these channels with great signal quality and download speeds. When the MoFi is locked on any of those bands, I do not have internet. I have verified that the MoFi is connected to Band 2 or 66 with good signal strength and quality. I have performed all the basic troubleshooting and reboots, resets, modem resets, sim reseat, new sims, etc. MoFi has updated F/w about 6 times since release so far and says 90% of customers are good to go, other 10% are having similar issue. I'm a tech guy, but this is a tad over my head. I get there is possibly of a f/w issue that still needs to be worked out. Thanks! Logs in comment

Good old MOFI support. I think we are their real support ;)

The biggest problem is how unbelievably new the Sierra 7690 modem is. There is no way for most to know if the settings and commands for it are new or different than that of the prior modems. MOFI Rushed these out.

Your best bet is to contact Sierra Wireless ( https://source.sierrawireless.com/devic ... es/em7690/ ) and se if they can help ensure your firmware is up to date and you have the correct commands to work with.

If you go to the advanced menus and copy the system log for us as well as the output from the AT!GSTATUS? command, and post both outputs here in their full text, that may help.

We can help work through it together.

I put the SIM from my Galaxy Note 10+ in the MoFi and had 4G Internet Connection, including Carrier Aggregation while taxing the bandwidth. Is AT&T blocking 4G on this device perhaps due to the plan I am on? AT&T insists they aren't. My Sammy is on a regular monthly contract plan and worked great in the MoFi. Here are the logs. Thanks!

The MoFi 5500 looks confused, can not even report the correct time and temp. :?

Would try a different version of firmware.

This is the latest firmware from MoFi, I have been in constant contact with them and they haven't a clue it seems. Now according to AT&T store rep says that they are blocking 4G on the MoFi because it's not a supported device. So it looks I lost $335.55 on a Pre-Paid Data Plan that AT&T originally said would work on my MoFi and even gave them my IMEI of the Mofi. What I did was have the balance moved to my post paid account and went to an iPad plan and plan to move SIM to MoFi in hopes AT&T doesn't ban that. Surely, they must understand that not everyone wants their junk Hotspot devices and needs the use of a 4G modem/router? AT&T store manager could not offer me any plan that would work on the MoFi. How do the thousands of Non-AT&T branded 4G modems get internet?

I said try a different version, newer is NOT always better.
Keep a log and take very good notes.

I was going to read the manual for the 5500 but they have not
produce one yet. You are on the bleeding edge my friend.

There are many skilled user on this board, maybe one could offer another
firmware that would work.

The boys at MoFi not having a clue does not surprise me

Would ask the boys at MoFi if you can return the MoFi 5500-7690 get your
money back and start over.

Or if you could get a MoFi 5500 with the EM7411, as an replacement, that has better support. :ugeek:

Firmware used at the time of logs was Rev. 2.0.21. 2.0.23 was released yesterday evening and am currently on that. Tried that with the recommendation to try TTL settings 64 and 117 (default 65). None of those worked either. So far I have tried ATT Pre-Paid Tablet/Hotspot Plan 20GB/mth, 50GB Post Paid Data Plan, and iPad Unlimited Data $20/mth added to my Post Paid Plan. Only plan that worked so far was the SIM from my Note 10+ that is on the old Mobileshare Value Data 14GB w/ Rollover Data plan. Everything appears to work fine with good speeds so it seems it's a matter of finding a plan that AT&T doesn't restrict 4G on. Could this be the fact that AT&T told me that their network is seeing the MoFi as a phone and not a Data Only device and that's why it works on the Phone plan and not on any Data Plans?

Thanks for the update!!
Did the new firmware fix the date and temperature issue?
Just curious 🤨

The good news is your hardware is working!! . :D

Now you only have to spoof your way onto the network. :ugeek:
Post pay is the way to go.

Fyi AT&T does not use TTL to keep people like us off the network.
So the TTL trick is useless for AT&T

Is T-Mobile and option??

Update: After hours of troubleshooting, investigating, speaking to dozens of AT&T Reps. Advanced Tech Support, etc. the MoFi 5500 EM7690 does indeed register on AT&T's network as a Mobile Device (Phone), not a Data Only Device. If you use any kind of Data Plan it will not work. Nothing in AT&T's Pre-Paid lineup will work (Data or Voice plans)

In the end I upgraded my plan from 14GB Mobile Share to Unlimited Elite with 3 Unlimited Data lines for $50/line. My bill is cheaper now than it was with 2 lines, no iPad and only 14GB of Shared Data. Most important, the damn MoFi finally works, and works pretty well!

Hi there Dr-Broadband, the F/w did not resolve the date and time. After installing f/w it sets it to 5/28/21 with wrong time. What I did, or what I think worked, was enable (check box) "Provide NTP Server" and then it would accurately sync the date and time via openwrt.pool.ntp.org. Any manual entries would not save for some reason. Temp I am not sure about. Is that reading in Celsius? It is in my RV which is pretty warm. On a different subject, I have the MoFi connected to Lipperts external antenna. Got it for $50 since the RV already came pre-wired for the external antenna with a nice mounting plate and gasket for the antenna. It seems like the Paddle antenna the MoFi came with works just as good as the external. Just how good is this Lippert Antenna? Here are the specs and my current signal strength on 66. My phone (Note 10+) is getting about -96dBm on Band 66 while inside the house. Why is my phone getting a better signal inside compared to the MoFi which is outside with external antennas and onboard secondary paddle antennas? Thought I'd throw that out there and get your opinion and/or recommendations on a better antenna. I'd really like to be able to mount to the existing plate that was factory installed. Dimensions of the plate are listed on the Antenna specs. I am not aware of anything else that would work with that plate. Thanks!

Thank you! I just replied to your other comment before I saw this. Yeah, I looked into those different plans but since the MoFi is being seen as a Voice device (Phone) on AT&T's network, Data only plans won't work. It has to be a phone plan. $50/mth for Unlimited Talk/Text/Data seems to be the cheapest plan I found that works on AT&T. The unlimited iPad plan for $20 would've been ideal if it worked on the MoFi 5500, but it didn't. Where we travel, AT&T is the better choice, especially in AK.

Antenna Selection it’s always a heated topic on the form.

Would look at a good panel type antenna
See link for an example
https://thewirelesshaven.com/shop/antennas/wifi-a ... antenna-n/

Make sure the antenna support the band you need just noticed the link I sent you does not support band 66.

You may want to start a new thread on the form “ antenna selection for RV“

We’re getting a little off topic from your First post

They’re also small dome type made for RVs
But there’s trade-offs more convenient but less signal strength.

Thanks, just wanted to see what you thought of the one I have now. It's just a basic one. I attached the specs for it on the other comment. I agree off topic. A booster might be the way for me since we are mostly in places with 1 bar.

Would stay away from boosters! You’ll get better single strength but poor Signal to noise

Just get a good quality antenna.

I agreed with Dr-Broadband. If your willing to put up a boosters directional antenna, you shouldn't be opposed to putting up a set of directional antennas dedicated to the modem. You'll get a much better data signal that way.

Unless of course you are wanting it solely for voice calls. Then a booster may be a good solution for that, though wifi calling on a good clean data signal may be a better all in one solution.

@l33der I am running into the exact same issue using ATT prepaid plan in an EP06. I already have the ATT Unlimited Elite on my phone. So do I just need to order a second line?I'm guessing the APN is different as well and not "broadband" since they are seeing it as a phone?

I agree post paid is the best deal (if). But that is kind of comparing apples to oranges... What I mean is if you are comparing postpaid Data only to Prepaid Data only, prepaid is better. But now if you are talking postpaid Voice/data/text to prepaid data only you are correct. My question is can a postpaid Voice/Data/Text SIM be used in a router long term without issues? I don't want to hijack the thread but I think it is a good conversation if that is the true fix for the MoFi WCDMA issue and others. I just tested with my EP06 using prepaid SIM and Unlimited Elite phone SIM and with my prepaid only got WCDMA, with my phone SIM I got LTE. Same window of my house. Also the prepaid T-Mobile $50 for 100GB no longer exists.

It’s my understanding the prepaid plans or for people with poor credit ratings. Or for people that do not trust the carriers with there credit card due to they sometimes hit with a high bill.

The carriers want you to use postpaid so they have access to your credit card.

So it make sense they make it difficult do use prepaid SIM cards.

Have you tried a post pay iPad SIM ie data only yet ??

The other reason for going prepaid is if you don't need continuous month after month use. I just setup a WG3526 and EM7565 in my RV with a SIM from Net10. If I don't need it next month then I can just not pay and let it go. I think for some time after that (60 days?) I can repay / refill online to get it working again. After that time I can simply walk into a Walgreens or Walmart etc and buy a new SIM which is very convenient. You can't do that with postpaid.

Call me alarmist but I'm still nervous about doing anything "non-compliant" with a postpaid account. I think they all have a clause in the TOS saying if they detect it in the wrong device or inappropriate use then they reserve the right to move you to a more suitable plan. You really are on the hook for whatever bill they send you. I guess certain settings makes that difficult to detect and therefore unlikely but even so ... I like the convenience and safety of prepaid. I don't need super speeds or huge amounts of data but hopefully something a little cheaper than the 100 GB for $55 hotspot plans.

Purchased this unit at the first of the month and have tried to gain an understanding of how it should function versus how it does function. Totally a newbie in this area and based on the last two weeks not sure I have the ability to operate what I thought was a plug and play.
Purchased a data Simms from AT&T upon arrival of the EM7690. Have never been able to connect to any 4G band, only 3G, which defeats the whole idea of how I expected this to operate. After reading this series of discussions, went back to AT&T today, hoping they could provide some insight I how best to resolve my problem. Well long story short, showed my device as a Nexgen Phone, removed that from the account hoping that might help, no change, still only 3G. They are at a lose as what to do that will allow me to use this device with 4G.
Is there any update on how best to fix this issue?
