WG1608 (v1) + EM160R GO firmware issues

Post by JoshKelly »

Hey all, I am having some troubles with the newer version of GO's that are newer than 18.0x.

I have a wg1608 (v1) + em160r + att elite

Basically if I flash a build that is based on 18.0x my speeds are double to anything newer and it works with my edgerouter 10 (plug and play), after setting apn to broadband, changing the 1608 ip to 192.168.2.1 and setting ttl to 65.
-My setup is the wg1608 on 192.168.2.1 and my edge on 192.168.1.1
-Note on apn, if I use "broadband' it seems band 30 gets priority with band 66 & 12 CA
if I use "nxtgenphone" it seems band 12 get priority with band 66 & 30 CA
Band 30 as priority gives me about 20mbps more download

If I use a 19.0x or 21.0x version the speeds on average are about half of what I get with 18.0x and I cannot get them to play nice with the edgerouter. When I change the wg1608 to a static 192.168.2.1 it will not assign and ip to the edgerouter. If I connect directly to a PC everything seems to work fine, other than speeds. Even if I set a static ip on the edgerouter it will not work. I don't know what is going on but to me the symptoms are if I were to have the edgerouter and 1608 on the same ip, ie 192.168.1.1. But this is not how I have it configured and I access the 1608 web gui through 192.168.2.1, so not sure why there would be a conflict?

I'm to the point where I think maybe the wg1608v1 has something different than the newer versions but I wouldn't even know where to start troubleshooting.

Working version of GO for me (18.0x): http://www.aturnofthenut.com/upload/WG1608-GO2021-03-23.zip

19.0x version that I have tried: http://www.aturnofthenut.com/upload/WG1608-16M-GO2021-06-06.zip

21.0x version I have tried: http://www.aturnofthenut.com/upload/ZBT-WG1608-GO2021-07-31.zip
Note on the one: If I flash the "full" version with load balancing the wg1608 itself has internet but anything connected to it does not have access to the net.

I guess what I am hoping and wondering is that maybe on these newer versions of GO that there is a newer process or extra step of changing the ip from the standard 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 completely, than previously?

Also, any idea on why I get half spends on the newer versions?

My EM160 is on firmware: EM160RGLLAUR02A05M4G

I think it would be a problem with the v1 of the wg1608 or maybe I have a old firmware version for the em160. Or maybe I am configuring things wrong for these newer versions?
Reason I say this is everyone over at: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/ ... =-1#bottom do not seem to be having the same problems as me.

I know this is a long shot but do you happen to have this file (WG1608-GO2021-03-23.zip)?
I am in the same boat, wg1608 (v1) + em160r and after testing several different versions of the firmware would like to check the aforementioned one. Unfortunately I cannot find it on the web.

Thanks!

New "BETA" firmware on the EM160 seems to have mostly fixed random disconnect issues on the EM160. There are even newer firmware versions of the WG1608 that work with the V1.

I still did not get the SIM tray for my WG1608 (but I am waiting for one) so I am playing mostly with WiFi (GoldenOrb_2021-02-27) and what I see makes me worried.

For testing WiFi connectivity I am using several devices to connect to WG1608 at the same time, some of devices lose connection over time (5GHz), the access point (5GHz) randomly disappears (sometimes under heavy load, sometimes when there is no traffic at all because this is the middle of the night). And when it stops working then it still can be seen in the ROOter web GUI but cannot be found by the devices and restart is required.

The total (real world) WiFi 5GHz AC throughput is about 300-320 Mbps which less than I expected from this device but due to unstable work this is not very attractive.

I have read all WG1608 related posts on this forum, I have read the relevant information on whirlpoo forum and I am under impression that WG1608 + EM160 is the most unfortunate combination of two not prime ready devices.

At the moment I want to try something built on the top of OpenWrt 18 even if I know that this is pretty outdated release.

Good news is that my WG1608 board does not have any missing components (0 Om smd resistor shown on one of the pictures on the forum) and when I used the thermal camera I didn't see any overheating elements meaning that at the moment the used voltage regulators (another concern mentioned by some knowledgeable users) work within acceptable range of temperatures). But that might change when I install the SIM card and CA kicks in since this is what mostly makes the modem (according to another source) to consume a lot of current (roughly 1A for 2xCA but this modem is capable of more than that).

You could request a new style build, with full wifi support, using OpenWRT 18x from Dairyman. He's pretty quick to turn requests around.

Didneywhorl:

What is the latest beta firmware for GO that there is for the wg1608. I have a v1 and am using 2021-11-25?

This ended up being faulty ports, LAN1 & LAN2, on the WG1608. I am told all of these WG1608 hardware are questionable.

Looking to convert my Edgerouter to Rooter or do a RP CM4 build, if the prices will ever go down.

Good ole Helium mining market made those nearly impossible to get at the prices they were meant to be sold at.
