MC7455 frequent disconnections mystery

Post by FraCanTob »

Hello all,
Nice that the forum is back up!

I've been running a setup with an MC7455 and Sprint service in MA, USA using r.ispsn connected to a Linksys WRT-1900AC v1 running since about 2017. It's been mostly reliable. I'm running GoldenOrb-2019-01-13 on the router ( GO-2019-03-10 didn't work for me--wireless wasn't working for some reason).

However, recently (last few months?) I've noticed more frequent modem disconnects. I have it set to ping a reliable server every 10s and reconnect the modem if there's a problem. I've tried new firmware, making sure the SIM card is seated. It's on a thick 6-inch-long USB cable. Antennae should be attached correctly, though I haven't looked in a while.

Pieces of relevant logs are below (I did my best to remove irrelevant stuff). Any ideas what's causing this? Steps I can take? I'm at a loss, disconnects are too frequent. Thanks for the help!

This is gonna be a tough one, cause it looks like you've done your homework.

Are you using external antennas or some small omnis?

I'd recommend moving the device around to see if that helps, otherwise I'm not really sure. It seems Sprint has these issues alot unfortunately, but it could be related to firmware versions.

You may try resetting the MC7455 to OEM, and then upgrading to the latest Sierra Wireless Generic firmware.

There are release notes about correcting Sprint related issues.

You can also use the Sierra Wireless AirVantage to perform the update without removing the modem.

There are several AT-Commands that must be entered into the modem to allow AirVantage to communicate with it.

Thanks for the thought.

I believe I updated the modem firmware a couple months ago, but it's possible there's something newer I guess.
Edit: I checked, I think I'm on SWI9X30C_02.30.03.00 002.046_001 which is the latest.

Yes, I'm using the small omnis that came with the USB enclosure for the modem.

Is there a best way to orient the little omnis? 90* to each other?

I usually orient each omni at a 45 degree angle away from each other.

45* away from vertical each, so 90* angle between the two antennae?
