MOFI4500 SIM7 download speed question

Post by vborstel »

Good Evening, New to forum. But have been reading the forum for a year.
I have MOFI4500 SIM7 with outside antennas (grid parabolic and Yagi antenna).
4.3 mile from tower. Grove of trees between me and the tower.
Using TMobile. TTL set to 64.
Should I expect better than 50 ping, 21 down and 4 up? Seems like with the signal I have I should be.

Hey welcome to your first post!

Super duper subjective question.

General rule I've used is the Bandwidth of the Band you are on can be multiplied x5 for generally the MOST you can get out of that channel.

In this case you are using the SIM4, which has a EC25AF inside. This modem can use B71, but does not carrier aggregate, allowing for multiple bands to be used at the same time.

So you would see a max speed of 25Mbps in this case. Likely you're getting all you can with that hardware. the 50 ping isnt great, but its not that bad really.

Good Morning Didneywhorl, Thank you for your reply. I was afraid that it was hardware related. What would you recommend for replacement? Something with band aggregation? Thanks again

Hello,

Curious to what that means in your antenna description.

Also would be helpful to know what your goals are? Before someone advises equipment.

Have you ever to checked to see if T-Mobile home internet is available to you?
If it is could get equipment from them then buy 4x4 antenna set up from The Wireless Haven.

Thank you for the reply:
Cell Phone 4G LTE, Directional Parabolic Grid Antenna Ultra Gain 26. Wilson 204411 Directional Cell Antenna. connected with 40 feet of LMR400 coax.
It would be nice for more speed, Mostly I would be satisfied with consistent reliable signal. From all the reading I have done, does not look like I am going to get that from Mofi4500.

I believe the problem is with the tower, NOT your modem,
cable or antenna!!

I have gotten 60Mbps with a MoFi Sim-7.

Take your modem on a road trip and test with different towers.
This would remove cables, and antennas from the equation.

Yes if you are closer to the tower you connected to a band with more bandwidth. The speed showed for Band 71 with that band width is very good! Didneywhorl is correct.
Just don't want to confuse anyone here with this.

Hey Dr-Broadband!

You're correct, that router CAN do more, but not on a 5Mhz provisioned B71.

I'd be remiss to say any other hardware will FOR SURE do better, because it might not.

If you're only getting B71 and only from that tower, you're stuck like chuck.

I say get a cell phone using Tmobile, and see what speeds you can get with it. Look for cell towers on cellmapper.net and drive around and see what you can get.

Do what Dr-B said and drive your router around and see if you can get on other cell towers and hookup to a faster band, maybe a re-aim of antennas is all it takes.

I will say that a mismatched pair of antennas is likely to cause issues, even if they are powerful and expensive. But hey, if it works!

Your signal is good, but ouch, haven't seen band 71 on 5MHz in awhile. Where I'm at, its provisioned at 10Mhz offering more. I would do a band scan, and see what other bands are available. After that, I would build a router (or buy) with a 7411 in it so you can CA band 71 with one of the others.

All, thank you for your comments. I am going on road trip and reorient my antennas to see what happens.

For you testing would turn off the WiFi and use a cable.
Happy testing / hunting for speed. :ugeek:

Better hardware can help but at the end of the day
It’s the up to the tower to give you the signal and data you need.

This is not an endorsement, just Information use caution

“The MOFI 4500 hardware limitations and numerous software and user interface issues made it hard to recommend the MOFI at the time - but the low-cost 4500 did earn some fans amongst, many who grew to love the MOFI despite its quirks”.
