LTE Modems vs ATT Uverse same speeds

Post by PhilJones »

Hi all, I have 2 LTE router/modems, One Mofi4500 with a MS7455 modem and a Turris Omnia with a EM7565 Modem..

I would like to rely on either one of these as my primary internet at home, I currently use a ATT Uverse DSL that at its best gets about 29mbps down. on average, 15 or so ( I live out on the edges)

I have cut the cable and stream tv and movies. After a lot of experimenting, it seems that when everything is equal... what I mean is that each modem is getting around 15mbps download.. the ATT is pretty stable, where the LTE's buffer a lot. I have an external antenna with 2 x wilson MDM boosters for Mimo, so I get a good signal, anywhere between 75% to 96% ... I have tested all Wired directly to the streaming device. So no wireless dropouts. I have an Nvidia Shield TV and a Amazon Fire TV

On the Turris I use GoldenOrb FW (latest) and the newest MOFI FW on Mofi4500...

What I would like to know, are there any settings for me to check Either Within the Modem or routers? I have tried QoS cake, piece of cake, and pretty much any combination I can think of.
Perhaps the buffering is just the nature of LTE internet? or maybe it fluctuates so much a steady streaming is harder to achieve? Any advice is appreciated..

I have some questions, cause its not clear to me what your setup is?

1. Is your 4G connection AT&T as well?

2. Can you share your signal stats from the Mofi, or the other device or both? That will help troubleshoot what is going on.

3. 29mbps down on DSL is actually really good, why are you wanting to ditch it?

Some observations I have:

I don't have any problems with buffering on my 4G/LTE connection. I could run my whole house on it, if I wanted, but I also have a DSL connection that I load balance between. I suspect maybe your signal isn't that great, and that might be why you see buffering issues.

Thanks for the reply, as I mention, I get at least 70% signal and as much as 96% on the Turris router... 4 of 5 bars on the Mofi router...but the speed does not seem to increase from 70% to 96%.... the 29mb download I get is good for DSL , but that is peak, and it cost me $82 a month. The LTE I can get from $30-$60... It's not so much the money, but I am getting close to retirement, and will be moving to a place that only has 1.5 down. ... so I am basically testing what will be my only option there.
Yes my LTE is from ATT towers... I actually have tried 2 providers (both ATT based) One is netbuddy, one is actually ATT... an Ipad plan... I 'do" know that the ATT plan is slower in general than netbuddy... I have gotten as much as 45mb down with netbuddy (on a good day) and never more than 17mb down on ATT. Same routers, same setup, only different sims.

Beyond what I given, what kind of signal stas would help?

Signal percentages are based on usually your RSSI values, which don't mean a ton in LTE. What you really want is a good SINR, and strong RSRP values.

I can't recall where in the Mofi to find that, but can you get a screenshot of those stats, or if you know how to run modem commands, run 'at!gstatus?'

Sorry for the late reply, I was doing a few more tests. As mentioned, I am new to this kind of tech... so if someone could check this debug log and let me know if it is ok, or maybe something not configured right, I would appreciate it... thanks in advance!

It looks like your second antenna might not be properly attached, based on how weak the signal stats look (you can see that in the line starting with PCC RxD RSS:).

I'd confirm thats its screwed in properly, and that pigtails inside that attach to the modem didn't pop off, or aren't grounding out by touching metal.

When using the EM7455 with Sprint, you must create a custom band 41, and lock the modem to that band, in order for Carrier aggregation to work, and the secondary carriers to show up.

Following this logic, you may need to define a set of AT&T bands, and lock the modem to those bands.

The bands and procedure can be found in THIS TUTORIAL

Thanks, but have ATT... CA works on this modem for bands 2 and 12.... still doing some research, not sure if this issue affects ATT or those bands, but sure looks almost the same type thing.

I am going by the read out you posted. It shows only the primary carrier and no secondary:

Code: Select all

LTE SSC1 state:NOT ASSIGNED
LTE SSC2 state:NOT ASSIGNED
LTE SSC3 state:NOT ASSIGNED
LTE SSC4 state:NOT ASSIGNED
That is the exact readings one would get with Sprint prior to locking the bands. Notice the secondary carriers (SSC1/2):

Code: Select all

System mode: LTE PS state: Attached
LTE band: B41 LTE bw: 20 MHz
LTE Rx chan: 41292 LTE Tx chan: 41292
LTE SSC1 state:INACTIVE LTE SSC1 band: B41
LTE SSC1 bw : 20 MHz LTE SSC1 chan: 41490
LTE SSC2 state:INACTIVE LTE SSC2 band: B41
LTE SSC2 bw : 20 MHz LTE SSC2 chan: 41094

I see what you mean... well, I did find a flaky cable that accounted for the mismatched signal strength, and I updaed to the latest firmware... I am not sure how this can relate to the sprint b41 lock, but here is my current log... Should the LTE SCC1-4 be showing something assigned?

Lets try something. Run the following commands and post the result

Code: Select all

AT!ENTERCND="A710"
AT!BAND=?
