Antenna Upgrade for MOFI 4500

Post by tom_va »

Hello,

I'm currently locked onto AT&T Band 14 for my MOFI modem. My current signal strength looks like this:

Here are the results of my band scan:

I currently have the MOFI sitting on a window sill, using this antenna on the outside of the window.

Without the antenna, I can only lock onto the slower 700mhz bands.

Speedwise, the best I see is just under 30 Mbps. The tower is about 1.5 miles from my house, but the line of sight is mostly through trees.

My theory is that with a better antenna, I can improve the signal strength and get better speeds. Also, once the leaves come back in, I won't see as much of a performance drop.

So, what is the suggested antenna setup for my situation?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Do you have adapters or something attached to this antenna to make it work? To be attached to the mofi.
Are there other Tower around that you could being get connected to on purpose or accident?
There is a possibility to get even more speed if you where connected to more than one band at a time.

While a good signal helps with getting better speed. And it looks like there is room for improvement with your signal.
A speed of 30Mbps is not bad for a MoFi.

The MoFi is at the end of the food chain of modems (CAT-4 Modem with WiFi-4), not exactly a speed demon! :D

Would bring the MoFi to the cell tower for a speed test. Take good notes like what day of the week, what time, run three speed test and take the average.

If you want to go full on outdoor high powered antenna that deals really well with foliage on trees you can go with this winner: https://thewirelesshaven.com/shop/antennas/wifi-a ... o-antenna/

I'm liking this. I currently have the antenna fixed to a second story window. I have an unused j-pole leftover from the Viasat installation that would be a great mounting point for an antenna like this.

Have you had experience with this antenna?

I am looking for a good one I can attach to my RV or put up when I get to my locations. I need to be able to stream meetings and large sets of data so the faster I can get my speed the better. I also am often out on family land where the reception is not so great where we could attach it to an old antenna pole.

Yep! I've extensively used both variations of the 2x2 and 4x4 antennas on thewirelesshaven.com.

I had them setup on our property in Texas for a few years. Great antennas, deals with tree cover well. Mine worked a tad better when mounted up in clear airspace and pretty high. I have a few posts on here, including some tutorials. Look at my earliest posts.

I was learning a lot back then, so asking a lot. :)
