assistance setting up we826/em7455 w Visible

Post by ericj205 »

All,

Background: I am a newbie. I have limited experience with a teknikal brand 9500VA (we826 running a Quectel modem) and ATT unlimited data business plan but all I had to do was change APN and LTE only with help from their tech support and this forum. It worked fine but I recently gave it to my Dad.

Current project:

I bought a used ZBT WE826 (16M) that is running GoldenOrb_2020-03-01 with a Sierra Wireless EM7455B.

Since ATT business data plans are no longer available I was going to try a Visible SIM.

Could you please advise me on how to setup/configure this system to work correctly? I have not purchased the Visible SIM/plan yet.

Will this system work as intended?
Do I need to restore the WE826 to a "factory default" state before attempting anything?
I read that I need to find a Verizon phone listed as compatible by Visible with an IMEI, then first operate the SIM in the smartphone before attempting to insert into WE826; is this true?
Am I running the proper modem hardware and firmware?
Am I running the compatible GoldenOrb software.

Just want to into this project armed with all the correct information to ensure success. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I did use the Visible online compatibility checker, I selected Android and entered the modem IMEI. It said not compatible.

Re: assistance setting up we826/em7455 w Visible

Post by ericj205 »

So I ordered a ZTE Blade A3 phone and SIM from Visible. I activated the SIM in the ZTE and verified cellular data at 7Mb down.

Next I entered the following commands using the ROOter interface:

at!entercnd="A710"
at!usbcomp=1,1,1009
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","VSBLINTERNET"
at+cgdcont=1,"IPV4V6","VSBLINTERNET"
at!reset

Then I unplugged the WE826 and inserted SIM and powered back up. The LED lights on the WE826 that remained on after power up were the RED Power LED and Blue WiFi LED. I tried to connect via WiFi from my pc and my iphone but got a limited connectivity notice. I turned off wireless and tried a ENET cable connection to two different LAN ports on the WE826 from my pc but could not get internet.

Since I got this WE826 used I do not know if it was even working correctly or if this is a SIM activation issue. Based on my experience described above, what troubleshooting steps should I perform next? Is there something I can do to verify the hardware is functioning correctly. Is there a way to restore to factory default so I have a known starting point?

Suggestions appreciated.

Try power cycling it first. These Sierra Wireless modems require a power cycle after changes.

Did you set your TTL to 64?

I did forget APN and TTL. Thanks for reminder. I just updated those, cycled power and verified they were still in place. However, I still have no internet. Any ideas?

Is your modem running in MBIM or QMI mode?

Whatever modem its in try changing it to the other. Then power cycle the router and see what happens.

if you want to do a fresh reset, verify if its a WE826T2 or a WE826Q and download the appropriate firmware for it. Then search for the "Firmware recovery method" on this forum and follow those instructions.

Tried LTE only, no change.

(EDIT: Did not try what Didneywhorl recommended just before this post)

Noticed on modem connection profile page that a custom profile was enabled so I deleted it.
Cycled power. Blue internet light still OFF.

Still no internet. Check modem network status. Saw Provider = Visible, my cell#, Protocol = MBIM, Network = LTE, CSQ: 24, Signal Strength: 77%, RSSI: -65 dBm, etc.

That is what it was set at already, I did not have to change anything.

not sure if the WE826 has a setting that initiates a self imposed cycle power routine but just noticed it did so without me touching it...

You want it set to automatic.

Current Cellular Mode: 4G Only
Change Cellular Mode: Automatic

That says set to 4G Only

Chang it to Automatic

it came with 4 antennas, 2 round on the 2.4G ports and 2 paddles on 3G/4G ports. The paddles look smaller than the ones on my other WE826. They are 6-1/4" x 5/8".

Yes that would light up if it was set up. Allot of times it hasn't been set up. Here is a link to check it and set it up.

Looking at this it looks to me like it is connected. However if you look at the signals that I highlighted in red. That -138 is your main antenna ports. That to me looks like the antenna isn't even connected to the modem.
Don't know if you have this tutorial or not but this is the how to build a WE826.

Use it as a guide to look at that wire. Look and see if it is disconnected or damaged or something like that.

Would Think you would want antennas attached for sure.
Once again your signal is highlighted.
Reattach and look at that signal again.
Maybe you have a bad antenna.

Also try this command to see if you are running the generic firmware

Looks like the generic firmware which is good.

If you are connected and can't get to webpages could be a DNS issue. Here is a link how to change that below. I prefer cloud flares. Which is 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1.
https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=19 ... =10#p10732

Another way to test out this theory is over wifi with a phone using the 1.1.1.1 app. if that is faster for you.

Yes

Shows MBIM protocol
Both good.

Signal looks bad again at -123.

Try the DNS thing next and let us know.

If you are trying to set Google DNS it is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
I'm still new to the LTE stuff so perhaps I'm wrong but I do know DNS stuff.

Not sure if you loaded the Firmware to this router or if it came with it? If it came with it maybe there is some custom rules set that are working against you.
Go to
-Network
-Firewall
-Custom Rules
Make sure there isn't anything in there that is working against your TTL setting of 64 and let us know please.

Try putting this into the custom rules.

#start TTL rules
iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
ip6tables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j HL --hl-set 65
ip6tables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i wwan0 -j HL --hl-set 65
#end TTL rules

So cut this out:

#startTTL
iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
#endTTL

insert this in its place:

#start TTL rules
iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i wwan0 -j TTL --ttl-set 64
ip6tables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j HL --hl-set 65
ip6tables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i wwan0 -j HL --hl-set 65
#end TTL rules

then save and apply, reset?

Yes cutout then paste in new.
After done can go back to it and see if it is displayed correctly. When you do custom rule don't redo custom TTL. Leave it alone.

I have experience with visible. Haven't ever connected with a EM7455 though. Have done it with a MC7455. Put a link on another post hoping to maybe hear from terryjett since know he has done it.

From here can only offer three more suggestions

1. do what Didneywhorl suggested and start off fresh router firmware.
Didneywhorl wrote: Wed Nov 11, 2020 8:45 pm do a fresh reset, verify if its a WE826T2 or a WE826Q and download the appropriate firmware for it. Then search for the "Firmware recovery method" on this forum and follow those instructions.
2. Since you have a good signal without outside antennas try to just tether the phone to the router. Should be ready to go with that. Since have apn and TTL set already. (do this now with My Verizon post pay phone to supplement my data)

3. Try a modem router switcharoo with your dad. Maybe this modem set up will work with his AT&T and you could try to use that Takitikal set up for visible.

It worked fine but I recently gave it to my Dad.

Greetings all! Been out in wild yonder for a bit and missed a lot of this.

There is absolutely zero difference between the EM7455 and MC744 except the size. They both program the same, get the same bands - they are twins except for the form factor.

How about posting a picture of your EM7455 (blackout the IMEI) in question so can see what version you have?

Sometimes they can be finicky. I have had to reflash the MC and EM models 3-4 times to get it straightened out.

The USB Tethering option on the Visible Blade A3 is grayed out as if it is not allowed or available.

ignore the above comment.

UPDATE, didn't realize I had to plug in USB to router before this allowed me to select "ON" on the ZTE. Got it connected to router and the router recognizes it, see screenshot. But still no internet via LAN port or WiFi connection.

I am confused. Forgive me if I have not read back far enough, on little screen. So, I thought you were trying to use a EM7455 to get Visible internet?

I do not understand where the phone comes into the equation.

Edit: I see back you were asked to tether phone. I have never tried to tether my visible zte blade a3 to the we826, but do tethering all the time to little gt-300n (https://amzn.to/2K3DVkN) so know it will work. Matter of fact we watching netflix using the setup.

Afraid can't help much with the phone tether to we826.

With the phone connected, go to Go to Modem / Miscellaneous. You may have to switch modems (ports) and reconnect. Other than that, not sure what else to try.

If you put the SIM card back in router and restart, give it a few minutes and go to Go to Modem / Miscellaneous and enter:

AT!GSTATUS?

Then paste the results here.

with ZTE tethered:

Modem->Misc->Current Modem->"Modem Present/Not Connected Modem#1 (and also for Modem#2)"

I tried the above just as a test and possible easy short term solution but it appears that is not going to happen. I would prefer to get it working correctly with the SIM inserted into the WE826.

that said, here is the latest status with SIM re-inserted:

The post below has gotten issues solved for many, including myself. It is about using windows instead of a we826, but the commands are still for the EM/MC7455:

https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=669#p4050

I am assuming you have reflashed the firmware already. Has the EM7455 been reset to work outside dell laptops?

Another thing that slipped up in me was did not have me time set correctly in we826. It is at System / System and Sync with Browser. Make sure both boxes ticked under Time Synchronization, then save apply.

Spent couple of hours trying to get connected and that setting along was preventing.

Make positive your APN is set to VSBLINTERNET

I haven’t flashed anything. That was my first concern since I got this thing used. I have no idea if it ever worked before I got it. That’s why I was asking if there were some initial troubleshooting techniques to determine if it was originally set up correctly. I can check the thing you noted above but may need to start from scratch with the setup. Would like some direction on how to do that.

Tried all the above, second box under time sync was not checked so I checked it, saved/applied/reset. No help.

Did the APN early on.

Also tried the following command set in the link above (minus the band related commands in the second paragraph) early on in my efforts.

at!entercnd="A710" : Establishes admin access to Modem
at!usbcomp=1,1,1009 : sets MC7455 to MBIM mode, required for most interfaces (routers)
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","VSBLINTERNET" : sets APN as visble (seems that capitalization matters)
at+cgdcont=1,"IPV4V6","VSBLINTERNET" : allows for IPV4V6 use... this was a setting that seemed to "enable" my service.

Was not able to get on laptop last night, read back a little this morning and see you have done many steps :)

I do not have my two other visible lines on we826/em7455, so could not look at them. So, took the SIM out of my ZTE Blade A3 and placed into we826/em7455. For some reason it would connect to the network but could not get internet. So as a test set to one band. I know band 4 is on my tower, so:

Code: Select all

Sent command: at!entercnd="A710"
Then: at!band=0B,"B4",0,0000000000000008
Then: at!band=0B
Then: AT!RESET
I have noticed that some we826 will not reconnect to modem after sending reset command, so wait 60 seconds, remove power for 15 seconds and reapply.

I am using the Visible SIM to type this:)

If you still cannot get connected:

Code: Select all

AT!entercnd="A710"

Go to Modem / Miscellaneous and enter:

To check firmware: at!priid?

Then: at!impref?

Then: AT!USBCOMP?

Here is link on how to reflash firmware
https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=18
Need to have file on PC already

Should verify what WE826 you have
the new WE826-Q
Older WE826-T2

Recommended to flash firmwares twice in a row to insure to wipe out old settings.

This is a link on how to do it the boot loader method. Some people swear by this method makes things cleaner.
https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5

I typically use the boot loader method. Then do regular flash method twice. I might be paranoid!

Don't be alarmed if the bootloader method pops up in chinese.

Hello Again,
Thought would link some WE826-T2 firmware that I have used in the past with no issues.
Incase you decide to flash the firmware.

As always like to put my disclaimer that in my experience WIFI out of these routers have not been the best. If you are going to put them to hard use best to disable the Wi-Fi and plug in another router to them. Basically using them as modem box.

Here is an older rooter version.
openwrt-we826-GO2018-11-03-upgrade.bin
Here is an newer WiFiX version.
WiFiX-WE826-T-GO2020-03-07-upgrade.bin

Everything looks ok, you seem to running latest firmware and someone reset/reflashed the card to work outside dell laptops. Do not see anything that should prevent connection.

Only two things different than mine:

You set the APN (IP4 & IP6) using AT commands, did you make sure it was also set correctly in Modem / Connection Profile / Default Profile? It sometimes does not get changed when you use AT commands. It of course needs to be VSBLINTERNET

To go cellmapper.net and enter in your address in "location search". If address fails, just your city/sate. Find your home. Select Verizon as carrier and "maybe" your closest tower appears. That is easiest way to find tower / bands. My steps may not be exact for cellmapper, but pretty easy to use and get basic info.

If I was you and still not connecting, would use reflash info @gscheb provided.

I feel for you, been in your shoes and it is frustrating to say the least.
