AT&T/CBA850: Random Loss of Connectivity (SWANS Fix?)

Post by iteration »

Hi All,

I have been troubleshooting this exact problem for months [SOLVED!] Losing constant Internet connection on Mofi 4500 (and my mind)(https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=8& ... it=tracert). In the discussion, the "solution" has been to keep all traffic within the VPN. This is terribly slow and doesn't solve the problem.

Description of problem symptoms:
  • AT&T - Cradlepoint CBA850 - Great signal - Multiple SIMs and providers.
  • Service and signal remain strong and constant. No indication of problems on my side of the WAN connection.
  • While all of our web browsing dies at the same time on various connected devices, if either of us is in a video call (usually using Google Meet or Zoom), somehow that person can generally continue on with the call for a considerable amount of time, sometimes another 30 mins, even as we can't do anything else. (And even the person successfully still on the video call can't do anything else on their device.)
  • Existing connections continue to work. NEW connections (port 80 or 443) no longer connect.
  • Connections via VPN (VordVPN) continue to work and are able to establish NEW connections.
  • From the terminal on the CBA850, I can ping and tracert any address successfully (ICMP)
  • From the terminal on the CBA850, I CANNOT telnet to any address on port 80
Disable SIM 1 and Enable SIM 2 is the fastest way to reset the connection and have service resume.

The best guess is that at some point, some sort of traffic/device limit is being triggered with AT&T and it is disabling HTTP traffic. I am absolutely convinced that AT&T has figured out the best way to f*** with us.

My questions are:
  • Has anyone else experienced this on the CBA850? How are you coping?
  • The CBA850 has Smart WAN selection. However the options are Data Usage, Latency (ICMP), Signal Strength and Jitter. Any way to Smart (SWANS) select the connection based on failed HTTP request?
  • Any examples of running a script on the CBA850 to check connection and change SIMs?
  • Does Cradlepoint ever plan to make an update to the firmware?
The latest (public?) firmware for the LP6 modem for AT&T is:
Module: LP6
SKU: LP6
Carrier: AT&T
Firmware: 02.30.01.01
Version: 02.30.01.01_ATT_002.049_002
Package Version Date: 11/2018

Cradlepoint now requires a yearly support contract to get firmware updates. Aka they are no longer free or readily available

Try changing the LP6 to generic firmware, manually. It will likely revert back every time you reboot, but you can add AT commands at startup I think.
