NEXS2GO with EM160R-GL Need Help Making it Work on Verizon

Post by scuball »

I just received the NEXS2GO with a Quectel EM160R-GL and I can't seem to get this working on Verizon ....

I have T-Mobile and Verizon sims that work in another router/modem.
Both sims are for hotspot data only plans.

My nexs2go is on GoldenOrb_2022-07-26 and works great with my t-mobile sim.

I did the following:
  • Reset the router to defaults
Used System - Backup/Flash Firmware - PERFORM RESET button
Made quite a few changes trying to get Verizon working so wanted to undo those changes
  • imei repaired my modem to match my other router/modem
  • Set the time
  • Set a new router password
  • Set the apn
    Set APN to fast.t-mobile.com
With T-Mobile sim, everything seems to work great ... and I'm connected to T-Mobile network and can access the internet.

When I use my Verizon sim and only change the apn to vzwinternet (leaving all else the same when it works with T-Mobile),
the nexs2go does not connect to the Verizon network and goes in an endless loop trying to connect to the Verizon network.
Below are the apn profiles on my Verizon sim.

Are there additional setting I need to make on the NEXS2GO to make this work on Verizon with the EM160R-GL?
Any help/hints is greatly appreciated

Thanks

I would turn off the PDP contexts:

AT+QMBNCFG="autosel",0

...and make sure you are using MBIM mode: AT+QCFG="usbnet",2

Then power cycle the router.

Then when back, double check the Profiles. Shouldn't need all of those.

The router itself isn't doing much other than supporting the modem to do its job, it's likely fine as it is. It really only needs the currect system time, and the right Connection Profile settings. Everything else on the router itself is just for local device stuff.
The modem handles all the connection stuff on its own, with some info given by the router. (APN and APN IP stack type, and SIM info mostly) Other than that, the router basically just says, 'Hey, connect for me and give me interwebs access'. and 'I need to connect to this IP with this port using this protocol'. That's about it, simply put that is.

Wow - that was it! THANKS x 1000! Those few AT command are the golden ticket 8-)

System - Backup/Flash Firmware - PERFORM RESET button
  • Set the time
System - System - General Settings
  • Set the apn
Modem - Connection Profile - General
    vzwinternet
  • imei repair modem
  • AT+QMBNCFG="Autosel",0
Modem - Miscellaneous - AT Command Terminal
  • AT+QMBNCFG="Deactivate"
  • Set Modem Protocol to MBIM
    AT+QCFG="usbnet",2
    Or from the UI
Modem - Miscellaneous - Modem Protocol
  • Reboot modem
    AT+CFUN=1,1
Make sure modem comes back before powering down
Can use Modem - Debug Information
  • Power down
  • Insert sim if needed
  • Power up
    Should connect no problem now
