Starter Router Rural Area

Post by Speedy2121 »

Hello gurus- I’m new to this sight and am learning as I go about how to get internet in an impossible rural location.

Few Facts: I had a survey done and it pretty much told me that my rural location had fresnel issues where my cabin in the woods is located. I’m about 5+ miles from an ATT tower that also has T mobile and about 5+ miles from a Verizon tower.

With an old cell phone booster (circa 2012 wit

h old yagi antenna I can make phone calls and barely surf the internet from the house. Note: there are other parts of the property that have better service.

Anyhow- I have bought directional LPDA antennas and Long ranger Parabolic antennas to try out for a test run. The only internet I can get out there would be satellite.

Before I go too crazy (money wise) what would be recommended for a router to see if this is even worth a shot? My plan is to do a MIMO and get the antennas as high as possible (they need to be 38-45 feet) which will be difficult.

Any advice on routers, cell plans, etc is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

To experiment on the cheap & give yourself the best chance of success I'd recommend a Gl.inet Mango travel
router, about $30. You can load ROOter(GO) on it if you want. It's only 2in. square, so it easily fits in a box mounted
as close to your antennas as possible. Power it over ethernet, a power injector inside your dwelling, appropriate
length ethernet cable out to the router box & a power splitter in the box( the Mango is powered by micro usb like
a phone). This type of set-up will give you the best signal you can get into your dwelling(no signal loss over ethernet).
The downside is you'll need to use a usb modem adapter with the Mango. This type set-up is working great for me.

Good luck, ddk

My favorite middle road setup that can have antennas attached and is plenty capable without breaking the bank:
