which router

Post by gspman »

Afternoon all

I am going to jump into the 5G/4G LTE data world. Looking to set up an alternate internet access for my home and to be mobile. I currently have Frontier ADSL bonded 8Mb service. Unable to upgrade my service.

Thinking about the pre paid AT&T 100Gb data only plan ($55). So i need to determine which router to obtain.
Thinking that a router with 2 SIM card ports would be a wise choice, for future load balancing and for travel in our RV.

Can anyone provide any guidance, pitfallls, worthwhile options?

Much Appreciated for an advice
Scott

PS i have (2) 16 port Data switches in my home, i is active in the network the other is just racked and powered and available for testing networks

Hey there. Welcome.

First thing I want to point out. Dual SIM card devices cannot load balance, nor hot failover. The device will lose connection, then reconnect to the second SIM.

IF you have dual modems, that is a different story.

If you want to use your ATT hotspot data plan directly with a 5G modem, and maybe a 4G modem as a second connection to load balance, I recommend the WG3526-P router with a Quectel RM502Q-AE modem, and a Sierra EM7565 inside (or Quectel EM12G to keep brands and commands the same :) )

If you need better signal, antennas is a whole other list of recommendations based on your needs at your location.

Full parts list:
WG3526-P router
Quectel RM502Q-AE Modem
USB3 Modem adapter enclosure to use the 5G modem with the router
2 extra pigtails to go with the adapter (they only come with 2, the modem uses 4)
2 pair of antennas for the 5G modem
Upgraded power supply for all the modem (4A or 6A would be better)
Optional second modem:
Quectel EM12G modem, or Sierra Wireless EM7565 Modem
mini-PCIe to M.2 modem adapter to fit the LTE modem into the router
Pigtails for the modem to router (1 - 10" and 1 - 8")

You can turn the routers wifi radios off (that isn't really that good on these types of routers anyway), since you likely use wifi access points anyway.

I've fed my entire house with this exact router setup using the category 12 modems. I had a GREAT speed connection on my local tower, and not much congestion. The router is more than capable of feeding whatever the cell tower can give, into your inside network.

I know this is an old post, but did you ever try the AT&T 100GB plan with an EM7565? I signed up today and cannot get the EM7565 to connect; neither an MC7511; neither an older MC7455. I configured the IMEI in the AT&T Prepaid website and tried with vairious APNs ("broadband" should be the correct one) but no-go....

I have an old Cradlepoint (MC7455) with older firmware that was able to connect (APN: broadband) but I want to use the EM7565 not the Cradlepoint.

Could it be the firmware?

EM7565 Firmware: 002.047_000 01.14.02.00_ATT
Cradlepoint: 002.049_002 02.30.01.01_ATT

Frustrating..... maybe I'll start my own thread on this. :)
