Poor man load balancing on Windows

Post by 56387f »

For users having more than 1 internet connection and wanted to run a primitive load balancing - there is an open source GUI utility called Network Monitor.

I played with it for a week and I am quite impressed. I used a wireless (very loose firewall rules, almost none) and a wired LAN (extremely strict firewall rules) connections on Windows 7 running inside of Vmware.
What I really like about this utility is that all what it does can be examined/many things modified - you can see all routes, modify them, assign them to a different interfaces etc.

This is not network bonding/link aggregation but still useful cool. Some more info about load balancing:

Interesting app, unfortunately true channel bonding can only be done through an ISP or VPN server.. Nonetheless with the proper settings, one can set certain traffic to go through one or the other data "pipe", dividing and making data/channel usage more efficient.

Interesting indeed.
a) open source - if one wants he can audit the code;
b) after installing Wincap driver it is possible to load balance two interfaces in the very simply way;
c) just look how easy is to manage different routes using the wizard - knowing how to manage the routes from command line I still like it very much;
d) ability to watch all IP connections and count the bytes - well, now I know that listening online radio at 256kbs can consume a lot of traffic!!
e) general layout and the way information is presented - the great way to better understand IPv4 networking.

Important to note: may not work great with IP v6 but I dont use it anyway.

Two more very interesting network utilities:

DNSQuerySniffer v1.80
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/dns_query_sniffer.html

DNSDataView v1.60
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/dns_records_viewer.html

Actually, https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/ is the great place all together, highly recommended 8-)

I've been using many of Nirsoft's utilities over the years, one of my favorite is FastResolver, which lists all the IP assignments on your network... really useful for those elusive dynamic IP's. https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/fastresolver.html
