I believe what it does with CA depends on the supported combinations for the bands you have available.
Here we have B1 B3 B7 and B20 and no it will not do anything other than 2CA unless you restrict the band set. But I think that's just a not so mature firmware.
Anyway the EM20 performs better in ...

Re: Quectel EM160 AT commands
I am happy to tell you that, although not documented, the EM160 supports EM20 way of locking PCC to a cell id (and therefore a tower) using at+qnwlock=\"common/4g\",1,EARFCN,CELLID

Re: Quectel EM160 AT commands
I found a way to make it behave properly . Need to lock the explicit bands with AT+QNWPREFCFG="lte_band",1:3:7 then it will do 3CA or 4CA. If you leave it "free" it will stick to 2CA... buggy firmware, as usual from Quectel

Re: Quectel EM160 AT commands
First tests show that the EM160 is unable to perform more than 2CA.
Very likely there is a problem with the firmware. The EM20 goes back in service!

I wonder if the EM160 performs any better than the EM20.
I just received my EM160 yesterday so I'll replace the EM20 I have been using since couple months and run some tests.

correct but this is what quectel decideed it seems, EM20 will not receive firmware updates anymore and you can only buy it second hand now. I have one and is a decent modem, I am now waiting for the EM160 to arrive and compare the two.

Re: Sierra EM9190 stuck in PCIE mode
I shared above. You need to feed 1.8v to PCIE_DIS to enable USB, and 3v to VBUS_SENSE. If you don't it will be PCIE only.
This is clearly stated in the documentation. I did not do the modification myself because to solder such tiny terminals special equipment and skills are required, so I had a ...

I got it off aliexpress in China. Hence no "official" vendor, so to speak... but the unit is not an engineering sample, but a commercial unit. I find Sierra attitude quite harsh, I have a paid for production product and they refuse to provide an updated firmware for it.

Just a follow up to my original question.

or it will not work in USB mode.

Ok, so I got this EM9190 modem from aliexpress only to discover it defaults to PCIe mode and in order to have it switch to USB3 mode, a specific pin on the M.2 connector needs to be tied to a 1.8 volt signal.

Its very similar hardware to the WG3526, and I've never seen this issue. I don't think it's a hardware limitation or kernel. It seems more of a bug somehow. I'll have to put an em20 into one of my routers and try it out.

Guys. I am experiencing an issue with the setup discussed in this topic. It looks to me there is some limitation that makes this setup not 5G capable due to throughput issues. Please see my post here: https://wirelessjoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1890 thanks.
