I just received a Sierra Wireless EM9191 and placed it in my WG1608 running the latest firmware (WiFiX-WG1608-G02021-09-13a). It shows that the modem is not present. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice on how to get it to work.

Yes. That Wifix version does not support EM9191. I had to upgrade to GoldenOrb_2022-03-24 ( OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT )

Thanks, It looks I have more than one issue. The WG1608 still shows no modem present after the new firmware so I tried with a USB adapter with Sierra Wireless drivers and it did not seem to pick it up either. I am going to return the modem.

I missed this completely but, if you are using the modem directly inside the WG1608 router then the modem wont put itself into USB mode. It's stock mode is PCI, and all of these routers like the WG1608 only recognize USB modems. You'll have to use an adapter that can apply 3.3V to Pin 20 and 1.8V to pin 22 of the modem cards pin interface (I might have that backwards gotta look it up). The wireless haven has such an adapter:

...But you'll have to use the modem in that enclosure and plug it into the WG1608s USB port.
We nerds are looking for some options that will work just using the mini-pcie slot, or some odd m.2 to m.2 type that will work in the M.2 slot.
