Anyone know how to get around the slow xbox connection. My download speed on xbox range from nothing to 1mb. But my router runs at about 20mb down. Something to due with double nat? Tried hooking up with ethernet cable same problem even when it's only thing hooked up.

Perhaps this discussion taken from the LTE.HACKS Facebook group may help:
For those that aren't able to control port forwarding natively, how have you overcome that issue and how well does it perform? The background is I'll be on Sprint non routable APN soon, and need Xbox live nat to be better than 'strict'. I've tried OpenVPN through a VPS, but I'm getting low throughput. I need at least 10 mbps down and 3 mbps up, able to control port forward to two xboxs, low packet loss, and not much extra latency. Thx folks.

Justin Wolcott: Use the lightest encryption you can for your VPN

Simon Knight: Thz justin. I tried no encryption. Same problem. It's wierd.

Justin Wolcott: Sounds like connectivity sucks wherever your VPN is hosted. What kind of speeds do you get without going through the VPN?

Simon Knight: If i upload a file to the VPS web server, and then download the file over the internet, the performance is fine. It seems to be something related to OpenVPN, just don't know what

Justin Wolcott: I easily am able to hit 30-40 mbps through my ovpn server on a VPS. Check processor usage while connected via ovpn, maybe the vps cant handle it.

Russ Westrem: Or just pay the extra $3 a month to get a static public ip with sprint and its cheaper than a VPN.

Simon Knight: I couldn't add that to the 1 year free plan
Manage

Jessie Gomez: I just retest my nat on xbox 3 or 4 times n it opens for me

John Randy: I got Nord VPN wired to my PS4 I get 40mbps down and 20 up. With att ipad unlimited plan though MoFi 4500

Simon Knight: Thx John. Are you able to port forward the specific port required through to ps4? Do you think it would support two ps4s (xboxs in my case)? What device do you use.as vpn termination point?

John Randy: so I have my mofi as really just a modem and switch which then goes to my asus rc3100 router. I use that router because the 5ghz band reaches all areas of my house without really any speed loss. I set up the vpn on my asus router so you would be able to run 2 xboxs on it

Simon Knight: Yep basically that's my plan too. Except i have asus 68u instead. Are you using openvpn with Nord?

John Randy: Yep

Jessie Gomez: Have to do it every time I turn it on but only takes a couple of mins

Simon Knight: Are you on sprint? With n.ispsn?

Jessie Gomez: No but try it it's free before you pay

John Randy: I get Nat type 2 but works great for everythinf

Ryan Roosa: You mentioned VPN was slow even with low encryption; the speed will be largely dependent on the VPN server location, the CPU of the client device that’s running the VPN on your network, and latency between your local devices and the VPN server. Using a geographically close VPS or VPN host will make a difference, choosing a router with an adequate CPU (even the little travel routers from GL.iNet should get 10-15Mbps down on a decent connection), and making sure your Xbox is connected via Ethernet instead of the built in WiFi will all ensure a better VPN experience. I use a residential, static IP from TorGuard that I get 80Mbps down / 20Mbps up on for port forwarding needs and it has been good.

Simon Knight: I live in PHX and I chose the closest VPS for reasonable price I could find, LAX. CPU is fine I've tried Windows OpenVPN client plus the one built in to the asus rt 68u. Top and task manager show minimal cpu usage. At this point i haven't involved the xbox because using a win 10 machine as the client with wireshark loaded i see too many retransmissions etc. You mention Torguard, does that offer port forwarding?

Ryan Roosa: Simon Knight Which hosting provider was LAX? There are a ton of overcommitted hosts out there so I recommend sticking to the more reputable and well known ones even if they are a couple bucks more. Mullvad VON has worked well for me to. With my residential IP service on TG I just put in support requests to have them open ports for me. Mullvad has self-service port opening which gives you up to 5 random port numbers you can use to forward with.

Ryan Roosa TG does not allow BitTorrent on residential IPs though so do not recommend that specific service if you will be doing any BT activities.

Simon Knight: I'm trying out vultr vps. I get same packet loss when trying on host in atlanta too. Also when i put a large file on the vps and download it keeping everything the same apart from not using OpenVPN, the packet loss is normal

Ryan Roosa: Simon Knight Is this on WiFi or Ethernet?

Simon Knight: Wifi but remember it works fine until openvpn is used

Ryan Roosa Simon Knight Right but latency really hurts VPN connection throughput whereas WiFi just between LAN clients will be much more tolerant of the same latency. Might be a good test to try via Ethernet for comparison.

Richard Jones: What is the purpose of port forwarding? I honestly havent played with it

Ryan Roosa: Richard Jones It’s required for incoming traffic from game servers usually for multiplayer games. If you have a truly public IP (no CGNAT on your APN) and UPnP enabled on your router then it’s usually seamless and most people don’t even realize that there is incoming traffic in play. But if you are behind a NAT’ed IP then in order to play those same games you need a public IP through VPN or proxy of some sort where you can setup port forwarding on your router through that public IP in order to receive the necessary incoming traffic to play the game.

Ryan Roosa: And it’s not just for gaming but any situation where incoming traffic is required such as running your own web server, VPN into your home LAN remotely, running a media server like Plex, etc.

Richard Jones: Gotcha

Richard Jones: I run 4 ps4s on my Sprint, but I also use a r.ispsn provision.

Matt Bushell: Wireguard, it’s brilliant!

I have torguard but have no idea how I would go about installing ii on router.
