Changing plans and SIMs from the same carrier

Another maybe silly question.
I have a AT&T plan from a reseller. Since I've learned more about the dubious nature of reseller plans etc, I'm thinking of canceling it and maybe signing up a prepay plan directly with AT&T.
Do I need to wait until the first plan is completely canceled so AT&T is no longer associating my IMEI with the SIM before I replace the SIM with one on a new plan?
In other words, what would happen if I simply replace the SIM while the first plan is still active? Does the system get confused because it has heard from my router with different SIMs and plans in a short period of time?
