Router /Modem Issue

Hello,
I have a grandfathered AT&T wireless home internet account and use an MF279 that has been giving me trouble.
I of course have the dreaded v1.7 firmware that I am stuck on.
My MF279 has all of the router functions disabled and I connect it to a TPLink M5 mesh network and the TPlink does the routing.
Lately I have had to boot my modem (mf279) 4-5 times a day to get my internet back.
When the internet "goes out" :
I can still ping IP and dns name.
I can keep doing something on a page or service that was already loaded (example Zoom, Stadia currently playing game, Speed test page previously loaded can be run over and over again.
I can't load any new pages from a wifi or wired device.
If I just reboot the TPlink system nothing changes
If I reboot the modem it always comes back.
Seems like maybe stale DNS entries, but I'm really at a loss.
I ordered a replacement modem which gets here next week, but still hope to figure out whats going on in case the modem alone doesn't do it.
Thanks in advance for any help.
