Recommendations for an LTE Modem Setup?

Post by uberhaus »

Hi all,

I'm new here.

I've been trying to get solid internet for the last year where I'm at. I went down the route of buying a Pixel 3 (Android 9) USB tethered directly to an ASUS RT-AC86U using Visible. I keep running into issues with data speeds being throttled and trying different methods to bypass the 5Mbps down limit being tethered.

Another major issue is, my download speeds are decent enough - can get about 10Mbps down to the phone, but upload is garbage... rarely going over 1.5Mbps. If I walk 30-50 feet or so from the barn, I can get 5Mbps up and 30Mbps down.

I saw that there are LTE modems I might be able to build w/ better antennas. I'd like to keep using my ASUS routers.

I'm totally new to this LTE modem approach. What would be some good options for modems that will work with multiple carriers (I might switch to T-Mobile for better speed), antenna setups, and a way to connect the modem to my existing routers???

What would be some economical solutions and more premium and what are the pros and cons of those options?

Thanks in advance for any guidance offered!!

Current Setup:
Visible SIM
ASUS RT-AC86U [Have 2 of these]
Pixel 3 XL on Android 9.0 [rooted]

Hey, welcome to the forum!

If you want an economical setup that has almost all bands supported, I would go with the NEXR5GO router with the Sierra MC7411 modem. Easy. If you need outdoor higher powered antennas, they can be added later, no problem

Modem: https://thewirelesshaven.com/shop/modems/sierra-w ... ced-modem/

If you want a bump up, I would go with the category 18 Telit LM960A18 in a WG1608D-M router. Cat 18, almost all bands and 4x4 MIMO:

The Telit LM960 will drop into the NEXR5GO router, but you'll need to add on two antenna connectors to the router (1/4" holes drilled into the case). Not hard, and fun to do, but not for everyone.
