I realise that this is a late answer.
The pupose is to have MBIM show up in the proto list when creating a new network interface.

Daniel Wood has created a script that will convert any EM7455 to Sierra standard on latest FW.
The Script is run from Ubuntu LiveUSB and is in my opinion the simplest way to to do the conversion.

For OpenWRT/LEDE you cn use the package MWAN3 to configure loadsharing and fail over.
